Continuous crimes against my credit card were rampant as I waded through the ubiquitous trends that seemed to plague the European retail scene. Of course I'd be lying if I was claiming to escape all those air miles unscathed. Although I was never much of a sweater girl - this season I seem to be inexplicably drawn to all things "purl". After fondling Stella's shaker knit cardi, Ricardo's ski sweaters and Chloe's (ridiculous) onesie - I succumbed.

One word of advice for knit neophytes - acrylic is your enemy.

Isabel Marant, the eternal rebel without a cause. I felt the need for us to revisit her fall collection together. I know by now you've probably devoured the fall campaign showcasing Miss Moss in her striped sweater. (And clearly said sweater has already made the high street a million plus pounds.) I am definitely feeling a little refreshed by the more lady-like movement of late. All that heavy black of seasons past was feeling more than a little tired. This was the dress that street-blogs were made of. Not for the shy-types or faint-of-heart. Style: 100 points. Shape: non-existant. I dreamt and blogged about this dress - until finally finding it at the Want Agency office a season later (and much on sale). Long story short - I've been having an ebay party selling off all the goodies that were unloved in my closet. Now this dress was definitely much loved - but unfortunately not frequently worn. So... I decided it needed a new home - until spotting this pic of Louise Dutoit during Stokholm fashion week Fall 08 (still so good)! What do you think? Keep or quiche? Don't you love her??

Canadian fashion can be a bit of an oxymoron, with typically cliched images of trapper jackets and Sorel boots coming to mind. And while these are occasionally the norm during some of the icy cold months (mixed with Wang and Margeila?) - there are also a barrage of amazing Canadians currently contributing to the global fashion scene.

Perhaps most obvious, Erdem. The current darling of the London fashion scene, having dressed everyone from MK Olsen to Michelle Obama. This Montreal native and friend is clearly a fashion fixture with a long and successful career ahead of him.

Rad Hourani also comes to mind. The avant-garde Montrealer best know for his androgynous vision of fashion. With disciples (and himself) oft featured on many a streetstyle blog - he too is clearly one to watch.

Mark Fast. Best known for his revolutionary knits and for sending size 12 models (gasp) down the runway - this Canadian is a Winnipeg native and London transplant.

Todd Lynn. Best summarized as Rock Star designer. His enviable list of bespoke clients includes the likes of Janet Jackson, Bono, Marilyn Manson and Mick Jagger.

Other note-worthy, up-and-comers in the Canadian design arena are: Jean-Pierre Braganza, Jeremy Laing, Calla Haynes and Thomas Tait.

Moving on to media-moguls. Before there were superstar bloggers such as Tommy Ton (another Toronto native and clearly no need to expand), there was Tim Blanks. All Canadian fashion followers worth their salt grew up on a steady diet of Tim Blanks' Fashionfile features. Since his departure the show has kind of crashed and burned - but the legendary fashion journalist can now be found contributing at style.com.

Leith Clark Lula Magazine founder/editor and freelance stylist. With a girly dream-scape vision of the fashion world and a cult following to boot - Leith Clark now calls London home and Chanel styling er... her job? Lucky girl.

And finally a relative newcomer but absolute digital media heavy-weight - Imran Amed. Better know as founder and editor of fashion blog, Business of Fashion. Of everyone on the list - this is who's blackberry I'd most like to steal!

Of course who could possibly discuss Canadian fashion without mentioning the maaw-dels! Oops! I mean SUPER models. The list is looooooong. And you know the names. (Daria, Coco, Irina, Stam, Linda.....) And if you've even made it to the end of this exceptionally long post you should win some kind of prize... like some expensive Erdem dress sponsored give-away by some hot Canadian shopping site. Common sense would tell me that such a purchase as this would make absolutely no sense considering the climate in Montreal (and the price tag). There are only 2 seasons - hot and cold. Presently we're experiencing hot - and come October 1st - we will move to cold. There is about one week of true fall weather where you potentially throw on a cape, some cute boots and go for a stroll. But now if Zara decided to do one for $69 I could definitely be tempted. Enfin! I made it home feeling like I had survived the Tour de France. Not exactly my most restful trip ever - but certainly highlighted by some fantastic moments in London, St. Tropez and in the tiny French village of Argeliers with my sister. I returned Sunday night only to discover that my suitcase (quelle horreur!!!) had not made the connection and decided to remain in Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris for an extended stay. Alas luckily it showed up the following day with my bounty of "hippy shit" that I seemed to have steadfastly accumulated during the trip. (That will have to be another post!) Moving on...

Before leaving I had read Garance Dore's post on Marché du Marin in St. Tropez. Not that I was doubting her - but still I had wrongly assumed that it would be like the other vintage stores in the tiny village - that being mainly stocked with ridiculously over-priced dusty old Louis Vuittons. And seriously, who wants them?? But after a full day of plundering all the tiny boutiques I stumbled upon this one only to be truly blown away. The clothes were a well edited selection of stripes, amazing denim, hippy blouses, over-sized mens shirts, 50's and 70's printed dresses galour with no shortage of satchel bags in all colours for the picking. On top of all this - the interior was like the inside of what I would imagine my rustic cottage would like on the rugged coast of Normandy. Sigh.

Daydreams over. Back to reality. Just wanted to share. And BTW - the shop keeper said he'd let us know about the NY opening... stay tuned!

Denim on denim persistently feels just right. Is the Canadian Tuxedo perhaps a new modern classic? Denim shirt, jacket, and of course jeans in all colours of the denim rainbow are what it's all about. I've been personally enslaved to Acne denim for the last couple of years, but I just found an amazing pair of Helmut Lang 5 pockets that happen to be the softest, subtlest shade of grey. The denim is super light weight and they are seriously as comfy as track pants. Only problem being that I now need to own them in all wash possibilities!

Back to LA... technically I was there for work, but I somehow made it to Venice Beach and Malibu on separate days. Found some amazing boutiques on Abbot Kinney - of course amongst them I had to go see Mona Moore's Venice Beach local for myself! Other faves - Guild (could've moved in there I felt so at home) and Heist... know the online home pretty well. Found these shots of Venice Beach by Hedi Slimane (believe me - way better than my own!) I travel the fashion capitals of the world to take hip photographs of peolple and then photoshop them out of recognition just because I can, I am the fake sartorialist after all and everything I do becomes fashion history the second I click 'Post to Blog'

However, after apparent complaints from Scott Schuman himself... maybe he can't actually photoshop them out of recognition? According to the NY Times article, Schuman is less than impressed by this parody of all his hard work.

1. It is 100% Emmanuelle Alt. There's almost no need to add her name credit. Her current fashion influence is rather staggering. She is single-handedly steering "cool girl" street fashion. Period.

2. Isabel Marant can do no wrong. Her brand of Talitha Getty, 60's, cyber-boho is making me cry. (Cause it's bound to impact my credit card at some point this season).

3. Camels are f-in' cool! (Umm and Natasha Poly too?)

Martin Margeila - The rumored retirement of Martin Margeila called for the biggest, brightest and whitest book you've ever seen. Filled with back stage pics, studio shots etc. Everything except (of course) a pic of the man himself.

Nick Knight - Famous British fashion photog really doesn't need much of an intro. Will make any Ikea coffee table look like B&B Italia.

The Private World of YSL and Pierre Berge - Now really why wouldn't you want a peak inside? They were amongst the last of a certain league of French fashion royalty that the world will probably never see the likes of again.

Helmut Newton - 70's/80's fetish fashion photog. Known for combining a certain erotic sexiness with edge.

The Teen Vogue Handbook - I know this may seem like an unlikely choice - but honestly with interviews by everyone from Amy Astley (duh) to Marc Jacobs, Patrick Demarchelier and Karl Lagerfeld... it makes for some fascinating fashion reading.

The Sartorialist by Scott Schuman - This is like required reading. OK fine - calling it reading might be a bit of a stretch. But even if you cruise the blog everyday, you'll still find pics you've never come across. Not to mention, being able to flick through it in whatever order you want is worth the $30.

Magazine love is a fickle thing. If you are anything like me - you are probably always on a somewhat endless quest for the perfect fashion mag. And yes, as soon as you think you may have found one - the editor leaves or the mag folds or the content goes to shit.

Okay, so I hope I don't jinx it - but this has yet to happen to Russh Magazine, my current flame. For me this magazine is all about the mix. When I read this Jim Jarmusch quote they published in Issue 30 (Daul Kim on the cover - hello?) - I kind of felt like it might be their raison d'etre? It's not that the content is so mind-blowing, but somehow they seem to capture some of fashions fleeting moments - perfectly. You know - when it's less about which designer is doing what and more about the feeling. (Cue laugh track).

Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination. Devour old films, new films, music, books, paintings, photographs, poems, dreams, random conversations, architecture, bridges, street signs, trees, clouds, bodies of water, light and shadows. Select ony things to steal from that speak directly to your soul. If you do this, your work (and theft) will be authentic. Authnticity is invaluable; originality is non-existent. And don't bother concealing your thievery - celebrate it if you feel like it. In any case, always remember what Jean-Luc Godard said: "It's not where you take things from - it's where you take them to." Jim Jarmusch
