Air Supply by Steven Klein - Vogue Italia

Seriously. As if we have not heard enough about H1N1 to make any sane person want to crawl under a rock. Is it just me or has the media blown this to situation to preposterous proportions? My office is in a state of lock down. Sani-wipes, hand-sanitiser and paranoia are all now as commonplace as Alexander Wang. I thought that fashion was the last bastion - but trust Steven Klein to find inspiration in such a sick topic? (Bad joke). Mind you - he has also been know to be inspired by rehab. Hmm.

The Glossy Recommends...

Magazine love is a fickle thing. If you are anything like me - you are probably always on a somewhat endless quest for the perfect fashion mag. And yes, as soon as you think you may have found one - the editor leaves or the mag folds or the content goes to shit.

Okay, so I hope I don't jinx it - but this has yet to happen to Russh Magazine, my current flame. For me this magazine is all about the mix. When I read this Jim Jarmusch quote they published in Issue 30 (Daul Kim on the cover - hello?) - I kind of felt like it might be their raison d'etre? It's not that the content is so mind-blowing, but somehow they seem to capture some of fashions fleeting moments - perfectly. You know - when it's less about which designer is doing what and more about the feeling. (Cue laugh track).

Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination. Devour old films, new films, music, books, paintings, photographs, poems, dreams, random conversations, architecture, bridges, street signs, trees, clouds, bodies of water, light and shadows. Select ony things to steal from that speak directly to your soul. If you do this, your work (and theft) will be authentic. Authnticity is invaluable; originality is non-existent. And don't bother concealing your thievery - celebrate it if you feel like it. In any case, always remember what Jean-Luc Godard said: "It's not where you take things from - it's where you take them to." Jim Jarmusch

Desperately Seeking...

... enough jewelry to make a pirate jealous. Love this shoot from a past edition of Paris Vogue. It features Vogueite Lauren Santo Domingo. And while she's clearly a stunning creature - I usually like it a little more downtown? But her skull boyfriend and silvery bounty make up for the missing edge. Argh.

Maciek Kobielski

Eternal Muse

At this point, it's perhaps a bit of a bore to worship at the "cooler-than-thou" alter of Emmanuelle Alt. But honestly - who else can simultaneously tell Christophe Decarnin and Isabel Marant what's up? With all that confidence - what's the follow up? Inquiring minds need to know.

Current Obsession: Lace-up Booties

Am I in need of a 12-step program?

Favorites? Hard to pick. I like 'em all. Current go to: All Saints work-boots. Second to those - grey suede Proenza Schouler booties. My heart skipped a beat when I found them in NY. Most recent addition: Zara black suede wedge booties. Great for beating around the city or office when Proenza's are too much (c'est possible?) Oldies but goodies: grey patent Dries Van Noten wedges. They get better as the seasons pass. Ones that require the most thought in the morning: Haider Ackerman tall boys. I'm not giving up on them quite yet - but I unfortunately wear them the least. That's it. First step is recognition that you have a problem right? xx

Feeling Purple

Still in recovery mode. Had a mad, whirlwind trip to NYC for the weekend. What can I say? Kind of felt like I was stalking Olivier Zahm? Kept expecting to bump into him at The Standard (no such luck). Couldn't quite figure out the elusive Boom Boom Room or Avenue though. Anyone? Are they for realz? Do commoners ever get in? Someone has to give me the 411.

Oh ya - 2 words - Proenza booties. Will post. Promise.

Fashion Week Favorite

Sure you might say there's no challenge in dressing when the sky's the limit... but honestly there's too many examples au contraire to list, that you have to give Vanessa Traina a little credit. She looks more comfortable in Givenchy than most people in H&M. And for that she's a Fashion Week Favorite.

The Uniform

If you didn't know it already... this is the uniform. Booties and legs, legs and booties. Giovanna is so convinced that she felt the need to put ankle warmers on top of her shoes to look like booties. See? Told you.

Nevermind

Nostalgia for the 90's. Who ever thought there would be a moment for it? But here we are referencing Kurt Cobain as though his notoriety wasn't for nought. And although I really should have had enough the first time around... apparently I haven't. Here I am craving the same plaid, stripes, leopard and boots that could only have happened (concurrently) - after the 80's.

Sasha Pivovarova

Somehow you get the feeling that her staying power is connected to something deeper than her devine face. Fierce fashion, style, sense-of-self. You can't buy that, contrive that, act that.

Riccardo Tisci The Great

My edit of Spring 2010 fashion week may be a little extreme - and it's not that I didn't see plenty of lovely things - as I'm sure you all have too. But really let's cut to the chase. Favorite show after 4 weeks of shows has got to be Riccardo Tisci's for Givenchy. If I was an heir to a romance-novel-book-fortune, oil princess, or excessively, independently, wealthy - I would have been sitting front row ordering up EVERY SINGLE ITEM. Yes I know - rather extreme. But that's how I role. And if that was my lot in life - I would probably wear it everyday like a bit of a billboard (perhaps forgoing the silly hats) and then I'd do it all over again next season. Such would be my devotion.

I'm-Gonna-Kick-Your-Ass-Boots

Shit. Ali Stephens in Bon Magazine, shot by David Vasiljevic. All I can think while loving this editorial is that stylist Sarah Ellison is having a major kick-ass boot moment. Can't really blame her. Can't get enough of my own lace-up booties right now. They seem to make every outfit better... especially when paired with something dare I say a little... pretty?! Adore.

Mona Moore, Mon Amour...

Since returning from Europe and spending what may have been the equivalent to my future children's college fund (kind of kidding) - I've been avoiding favorite Montreal shoe haunt Mona Moore. And obviously being in Montreal, the opening of the Venice Beach edition doesn't really affect me... however what my eyes locked onto were the Phi boots being worn by co-owner Lisa Bush. Dear God! Had I known that they were arriving I...I...I... wouldn't have given my whole paycheck to Isabel Marant?? Who am I kidding!?

Appropriately the new Venice Beach location seems to have it's own identity. Much more modern and than it's "girlier" Montreal cousin. And we were also fortunate enough to steal a peek inside Lisa Bush's California home that was recently featured in Elle Decor. It's a stunning example of eco-chic meets Cali cool. Believe me you're going to love....

Rococo Raquel for Vogue Nippon

Shot by Mario Sorrenti for October's Vogue Nippon. Stunning Raquel Zimmerman killing it on the cover decked in Louis Vuitton.

Art and Commerce

In one of the more intelligent editorials I've seen in awhile - Freja and Raquel star in this epic photo novel for W Magazine. Shot by Inez and Vinoodh at both the famed Centre Pompidou in Paris and Moma in NY - art history buffs will recognize some of the featured sculptures and artworks (scratching me head thinking back to Art History...hmm). Freja meanwhile seems to be "commerce" and Raquel more the "art"? Love also how Freja disappears and reappears like some kind of Where's Waldo joke throughout. And the clothes? Jeez. Enough Balenciaga, Louis Vuitton, Chanel and YSL to sink anyones personal commerce.

Anyhow - is fashion not the perfect definition of art and commerce? Brilliant.

La Garçonne

Current mood: La Garçonne. It's all about the boys. Fantastic femmes like Sophia Coppola and Charlotte Gainsbourg do it best. But of course it was done first by the likes of Katherine Hepburn, Greta Garbo and Bianca Jagger. What you need - impeccably tailored jackets, slouchy pants, paired up with a micro-thin t-shirt. Nothing can be too polished. Whole look needs to be slightly undone.

My inspiration is fueled by a week in Paris and one in London. If I see another wanna-be Blondie in ripped up tights... argh. Had an amazing time - highlighted by a raid of the rue Jacob Isabel Marant shop and party-time at the PPQ party in London. That's it. Need to sleep. Battling serious jet-lag and I have to make it to the weekend. Bis, The Glossy Ed.

Uniform Style

"Imagine Carine Roitfeld seen through the lens of Helmut Newton and you're somewhere close to Hannah Marshall's version of contemporary dressing."

Sarah Mower Sept 08

Designer Hannah Marshall on Show Me Your Wardrobe. Love her uncompromising almost uniform-like style. She seems to be saying, "Ya so? I like black. A lot. And my current M.O. is all about shoulders!" We say, HELL YA.

Danny Roberts - Illustrator? Blogger?

Equally well know for his modelizer portraits as he is for his series of uber-blogger portraits - (cue images the blogettes: Susie Bubble, Sea of Shoes, Fashion Toast, etc). Danny Roberts, aka Igor and Andre is the blogging illustrator to the blogger-stars. And for those of you that are blogaholics (no need to hide) - I'm sure this isn't new news? I'm sharing in part because a) not everyone is a blogaholic b) it's only a matter of time before he's illustrating the cover of Pop! Seriously. Oh ya - he's done a highly covetable t-shirt too!
